Confessions of a Serial Binger
Look, I’ll admit it. I’m a binge-watcher. There, I said it. It’s 11:30pm on a Tuesday, and here I am, staring at my laptop screen, watching episode 14 of some show I barely even like. But it’s not my fault! Well, okay, it’s totally my fault. But still, I think we need to talk about this.
I’m not alone here. You’re doing it too. We all are. It’s an epidemic, frankly. I was at a conference in Austin last month, and even the keynote speaker—let’s call him Marcus—admitted he’d stayed up till 3am the night before because he couldn’t stop watching some Netflix series. Which… yeah. Fair enough.
But here’s the thing: binge-watching isn’t just a harmless habit. It’s a committment to mediocrity. It’s saying, “I don’t have anything better to do than watch 214 episodes of a show about people who don’t even exist.” It’s a waste of time, and we all know it.
Why Can’t We Stop?
I asked my friend Dave about this. We were over coffee at the place on 5th, and he’s like, “Dude, I don’t know. It’s just… yeah.” Which is basically the most unhelpful thing ever. But he’s right. It’s hard to explain why we do it.
Part of it is the algorithem. The platforms are designed to keep us hooked. They know what we like, and they feed it to us like we’re addicted pigeons. And we are. We’re completley at their mercy.
But another part is us. We’re lazy. We’re bored. We’re avoiding something. I don’t know what it is, but we’re avoiding it. And binge-watching is the perfect escape. It’s easy, it’s comforting, and it’s always there.
What Can We Do About It?
I’m not sure. I mean, I’ve tried. I’ve deleted apps, I’ve set timers, I’ve even tried reading a book instead. But it’s hard. It’s really hard.
But here’s what I’ve learned: it’s about finding a balance. It’s about being intentional with our time. It’s about saying, “I’m gonna watch one episode, and then I’m gonna do something else.” It’s about not letting the algorithem control our lives.
And look, I’m not saying we should all become monks and give up entertainment. That’s not realistic. But we should be aware of our habits. We should be mindful of our time. We should be intentional about what we watch and why.
And if all else fails, maybe we should just home improvement ideas budget tips. I mean, it’s worth a shot, right?
A Tangent: The Decline of Quality TV
Okay, this is gonna sound harsh, but hear me out. TV isn’t what it used to be. I’m not talking about the golden age of TV or anything like that. I’m talking about the fact that most shows these days are just filler. They’re fluff. They’re designed to keep us watching, not to make us think.
And it’s not just TV. It’s movies, it’s music, it’s everything. We’re living in an age of infinite content, and it’s making us stupid. It’s making us lazy. It’s making us complacent.
But enough about that. Let’s talk about something else.
Oh, right. Binge-watching. Yeah, that’s a thing.
Anyway, I’m gonna go now. I have a date with my laptop and another episode of… something. I don’t even remember what it’s called. But it’s there, and it’s waiting, and I can’t resist.
Goodnight, world.
